Faculty of Education and Integrated Arts and Sciences selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “2005 Program for the Promotion of Teacher Training in Universities and Graduate Schools”

September 2, 2005
This program, started this year by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, recognizes that teacher training GP is indispensable to cultivating teachers with a high degree expertise in their field and practical teaching ability and to the enhancement of continuing education for teachers. Focused financial support will be given to outstanding and distinctive educational projects centered on universities and graduate schools – the institutions where training of teachers in compulsory education takes place – selected from the competitive environment of private and public universities, which enrich and develop the educational content and teaching methods for cultivating highly qualified teachers. Out of 101 total applications, 34 were selected. The project application made by the Waseda University Faculty of Education and Integrated Arts and Sciences and selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology will involve the entire university and is outlined below.

【Project Name】
Program for the strengthening of Teacher Training focused on Clinical Education – A proposed Open System based on the Waseda Model –

【Project Length】
2 years

【Project Contents】
The aim of this two year model project, utilizing a private university course environment for an open system of teacher development, is to revise the whole of teacher training in order to produce teachers that have a high degree of ability in (among others) clinical education, instruction and have the ability to connect socially. Specifically, the project is comprised of the following three pillars.

(1)The creation of an “Initiative Course” – as the core for practice in clinical education – and high-level, practical specialized coursework targeting motivated departmental and graduate students.
(2)The use of in-service training as a form of reciprocal extension between boards of education and universities.
(3)The holding of specialized educational counseling related to, among other things, student instruction and subject instruction at the “Education and Integrated Arts and Sciences Clinic.”

Object lessons for the Initiative Course students will also be carried out with the in-service training (2) and the “Education and Integrated Arts and Sciences Clinic” (3). In order to cultivate teachers with the ability to handle the multifaceted and complex current issues within school education it is crucial to tie theory and practice – university and actual school setting – together, and this is accomplished by putting emphasis on clinical education. At the same time, lifelong commitment on the part of teachers to continue to improve themselves through study, training and the experiences gained through daily practice is needed.
This project uses study, training and daily practice as its keys in the ongoing improvement of teacher quality.
