Title:Changes in Baseball – Current and Future of Japanese Baseball
About Ike “Akihiro” Ikuhara & Peter O’Malley Memorial Sports Management Class:
This class was made possible by the former Los Angeles Dodger owner/president Mr. Peter O’Malley, a long time leader and contributor of international baseball. In order to perpetuate the memory and accomplishments of the late Ike Ikuhara, a graduate of Waseda, who worked for Mr. O’Malley for 27 years, Mr. O’Malley gave a generous monetary donation to Waseda University to establish the class. Ikuhara, a long time Dodger executive, who rose to be the assistant to president O’Malley, worked toward building positive relations between Japan and America.
In recognition of his hard work, Ike was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992.
The first class was held on May 16, 2003 at Ohkuma Auditorium by Mr. O’Malley followed by the second class on November 1 by Mr. Tsunekazu Takeda, president of Japan Olympic Committee. Mr. Tommy Lasorda, Senior Vice President of Los Angeles Dodgers, was the speaker for the 3rd class on June 24th, 2004. The 4th class welcomed Mr. Saburo Kawabuchi, Chairman of Japan Football Association.
As a part of the program, Waseda University and Los Angeles Dodgers provide internship program for the students enrolled in the class. In December 2003, Kenta Kasahara became the first student to have the opportunity to spend three weeks at Los Angeles Dodgers as an intern. Last summer, 3 more students had the opportunity to work as interns for the Los Angeles Dodgers for 5 weeks. This summer, 2 junior students are scheduled to participate for 4 weeks. Students who complete the internship program will receive credits from Waseda University.
