“School Construction Project in Afghanistan” promoted by Waseda University Volunteer Center

July 6, 2005
Waseda University Volunteer Center (WAVOC) has been contributing to the “Afghanistan Rehabilitation Support Project” by promoting the construction of a high school in Sendit-dara (*1), a village located near Kabul in Afghanistan. On June 25, 2005, the school was handed over to the Afghan Government after the opening ceremony.

WAVOC started this project in March 2004 in collaboration with the National Federation of UNESCO Association in Japan. Kazumasa Oda, a famous musician and a graduate of Waseda University, raised the initial fund for the project by donating a part of the proceeds of a charity concert (*2) performed on May 4, 2003. The project was also funded by Felissimo Co. Ltd and other Japanese subscribers to be finally completed this year.

“Afghanistan Rehabilitation Support Project”

WAVOC, established in April 2002, has been promoting the educational support project for Afghanistan since June 2002. WAVOC will organize workshops and accept exchange students and researchers from Afghanistan in the human development project conducted under the academic exchange agreement between Waseda University and Kabul University.

WAVOC intends to send student volunteers to Afghanistan to offer continuous educational support for the village of Sendit-dara and to promote friendship activities with the students of Kabul University, when the country’s “danger ratings” announced by the Japanese Foreign Ministry has become low enough to assure peace and order.
