Waseda University granted its honorary doctorate to Bill Gates
June 28, 2005
- Waseda University granted an honorary doctorate to Mr. Bill Gates,
the chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft Corporation,
on June 28, 2005. (For your reference:
What is an “honorary doctorate?”)
The award ceremony was held at Waseda University’s Building No.8,
classroom 106 in front of a great number of students, faculty,
staff and mass media people. After the conferment, Mr.Gates gave a memorial speech to the audiences.
In his speech, he said “I am looking upon students with great expectations
on what they can do to make this world a better place.
On this occasion, I would like to extend my gratitude to all the people
who approved Microsoft’s contribution in Japan and to all of my partners,
including Mr. Kazuhiko Nishi (the founder of ASCII and a graduate of Waseda Univ.)
who helped me a great deal to achieve recognition in this country.
I intend to contribute more to the Japanese society and will keep on collaborating
with my partners to make my big dreams come true.”
Profile of Mr. Bill Gates
William (Bill) H. Gates III is chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft Corporation.
He was born on October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington. Gates entered Harvard University in 1973 as a freshman.
While at Harvard, he developed a version of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer, the MITS Altair.
In 1975, when he was in his junior year, Gates established Microsoft with his childhood friend, Paul Allen.
Gates is a specialist in personal computer software and his systematic and creative achievements
have contributed greatly to the rapid expansion of the software industry.
