Adoption of the “Internationalization Promotion Program for University Education (Strategic Support of International Cooperation)”
August 4, 2005
- In recent years, in tandem with the development of globalization
and in the midst of the increasingly global, international flexibility of higher education,
there has been a concerted effort in Europe, America and the countries of Asia to support
foreign exchange of students and the internationalization of education.
In Japan also, the further promotion of internationalization in higher education
is a pressing issue. Thus, in order to improve Japan’s international competitiveness
in higher education, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
has decided to offer financial assistance to those universities that are forging
strategic ties of international cooperation.
Waseda University (President: Katsuhiko Shirai), based on the above decision
by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, proposes to undertake
the 2005 “Internationalization Promotion Program for University Education
(Strategic Support of International Cooperation).” This project will primarily be undertaken
by the Waseda University Business School (Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, MBA/MOT Program),
in accordance with the following adopted proposal.
| Application Theme: | Strategic Support of International Cooperation |
| Project Name: | Singapore International Cooperative Education Project of Waseda University
―MBA/MOT Double Degree Project of Waseda University and Nanyang Technological University― |
| Project Credit: | Waseda University Business School (Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, MBA/MOT Program) |
| Project Outline: | Waseda strives to increase its global competitiveness in order to become a top-ranked school in the world. It will sprint ahead of the other universities of Japan to develop graduate level education projects in the center of the Asia-Pacific region: Singapore. Singapore, as part of its goal to become a country built on the “knowledge industry,” has sought to establish itself as the hub of higher education in Asia and invites the presence of top level European and American universities and the research institutes of leading companies.
While Waseda is already undertaking projects in higher education within Singapore, it has also joined with Olympus Co. to run a bioscience laboratory in Singapore. It is from this base of accomplishments that Waseda has decided to further propel itself into higher education projects overseas by forming a strategic partnership with Singapore’s Nanyang Technical University. The current project proposal has this strategic cooperation program in Singapore as its objective. Specifically, Waseda will begin an MBA/MOT (Master of Business Administration) double degree program at Nanyang Technical University in July of 2006. Basic subjects will be taught by NTU lecturers, and development courses will be taught by Waseda lecturers at the NTU campus.
