Waseda University and Peking University hold first joint China-Japan
administered course
August 3, 2005
- Starting September of 2005, Waseda University
(location: Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo; President: Katsuhiko Shirai)
will begin a joint course together with Peking University.
This is Peking University’s first joint course with another university
and also a first to have a regular course endowed by a Japanese corporation.
1.Background and Aim of the Course
Waseda’s relations with China began in 1905
with the establishment of the Kiyokuni Exchange Club.
This aided the modernization of China through its contribution
to the development of China’s human resources, and created historically
strong bonds between Waseda and China. Furthermore, Waseda’s slogan
for the 21st Century is “building a partnership of knowledge
in the Asia-Pacific region,” and we are pouring our energies
into cultivating people to be “active international citizens.”
In 1982 Waseda and Peking University agreed to an academic
exchange agreement; in December of 2003, in order to further cooperative education,
the “Waseda University and Peking University Cooperative Body for Education Research”
was established, and, from September of 2005, with the complete cooperation of Peking University,
the first “double degree system”(students from both universities being able to receive credit
from both Waseda and Peking University upon graduation) established at the academic department level
between China and Japan will be put in place.
Students in the 2005 Waseda inaugural class will be sent to Peking,
and students in the 2005 Peking inaugural class will be sent to Waseda.
One facet of this cooperative body undertaking is the mutual establishment
of courses at both universities which will count for credit and be applicable
within a student’s coursework.
This is an epochal agreement – unprecedented in China – towards furthering mutual education.
2.Course Themes and their Relationship to Donors
The jointly administered courses to be established in collaboration
with Peking University are greater, from the standpoint of research and education,
than anything attempted previously.
This effort is being supported by Tokyo Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co. and Mizuho Securities Co.,
and from this support two course with the themes of ‘environment’ and ‘corporate finance’ will be created,
the first-ever, jointly administered attempt between China and Japan.
<Environment>
This course is intended as a means of putting to
educational use the research results accumulated from the 3 year old
joint symposium on the environment conducted by Waseda and Peking University.
The Environment is a topic which has garnered a lot of concern,
even from the Chinese government.
Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co.,
which has involved itself in such environmental problems
such as rehabilitating mangrove forests, has agreed to help support this course,
as part of CSR, to promote environmental education activities globally
and to promote international exchange between China and Japan.
<Corporate Finance>
Waseda University and Mizuho Securities Co.
have engaged in collaborative research since 2003, and, as part of this,
Mizuho Securities Co. endows courses in all faculties and helps to develop people
in the field of finance. For China also, finance is an urgent and important field.
Peking University holds a strong interest in this topic
and thus it was decided to make corporate finance one of the endowed courses
jointly administered by China and Japan.
