1.National Health Insurance
International students are obliged to participate in the National Health Insurance Scheme. You are required to register at the National Health Insurance Section of the municipal office, with your Certificate of Alien Registration.
Whenever you are injured or sick and need medical care, you must show your Insurance Certificate to the hospital receptionist or the doctor. 70% of the medical charges will be covered by the National Health Insurance, and you will pay the remaining 30%. Health Insurance does not cover the following situations: normal childbirth, traffic accidents, general health check-ups, plastic cosmetic surgery, etc.
Please consult the National Health Insurance section of your ward or city office.
2.The Medical Expenses Assistance Scheme for Foreign Students
The Medical Expense Assistance Scheme for Foreign Students is a scheme under which the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) reimburses international students for 35% of the medical expenses paid in case of illness or injury. Under this system, the student must pay the full amount to the doctor or hospital and claim this sum back from the Center for International Education (CIE) having received proof of receipt of payment from the medical institution on the prescribed form available from the CIE. This form is to be handed in to the CIE by the 6th of the following month to claim for reimbursement assistance for medical expenses incurred during the month.
If you fall ill or are injured and have to go (or have already been) to the doctor's or a hospital, be sure to come to the CIE and apply for assistance. Reimbursements are made to you through your bank account. Students in the Undergraduate and Graduate Schools of Science and Engineering can ask the staff at the International Exchange Office.
