The School of Letters, Arts and Sciences II was established in 1949 as the evening division of the school of Letters , Arts and Sciences, the day division, for young men and women who were working and could not attend university during the day. At the time of its establishment, the curriculum of the School of Letters, Arts and Sciences I was followed without modification. In 1966,however,the School was given its own curriculum. The same Waseda faculty members teach in both Waseda's Schools of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
The School accepts not only students fresh from high school but also working students, students working part-time,junior college graduates wishing to be admitted as juniors, university graduates and various other students of all ages, resulting in a great variety of backgrounds, experience and purposes.
In the 50 years since its establishment, the School has produced many graduates who have distinguished themselves in the academic world, education, literature, journalism, the arts, entertainment and other spheres. Seeing how many men and women in the forefront of their professions were once students of this School while working, one can easily understand how indomitable, independent, straightforward and sturdy the evening division students are. Since 1996 the School consists of five Majors; Philosophy and Religion, Literature and Linguistics, History and Folklore, Human and Social Sciences, Arts in Performance.
