Graduate School of Sport Sciences

Year of Establishment and Outline
Since its establishment in 1882, Waseda University has supported the field of athletics. It could even be said that Waseda University helped lay the foundation of modern athletics in Japan. At the time of establishment, Shigenobu Okuma, the founder of Waseda University, said, “There is no question that intellectual training, moral education, and athletics, all three, must develop in concert.” From then on, he actively encouraged students to become involved in sports. By producing the first Japanese Olympic gold medalist, and through the nationally anticipated baseball matchup with rival school and athletic powerhouse Keio University, Waseda’s philosophy has contributed greatly to the popularization of athletic competitions among the Japanese people.
Waseda has produced many elite athletes, leaders, teachers, and specialists in sport management. Moreover, based on an approach that scientifically analyzes the capacity to compete at the highest level in athletics. At Waseda, the knowledge, skills, and human network supporting this approach have been an integral part of the organizational structure that has accompanied the tradition of the university since its inception.
In 1964, in response to the demand for a systematic approach to Sport Sciences within the university, Waseda introduced a specialized degree in Sport Sciences in the Department of Education. This took place in the same year that the Olympic Games were held in Tokyo, and marked the start of a high-caliber education program at Waseda University with a student capacity of 160.
Again in 1987, Waseda responded to the need of the hour by increasing the student capacity to 240 at the newly established Tokorozawa Campus, which offered brand new sports and experimental facilities. The program was reorganized, and the Department of Sport Sciences was created within the School of Human Sciences. Soon, the need to develop specialized graduate-level education also became apparent; in response, a graduate program in Human Sciences was established in 1991. It offered research opportunities in Sport Sciences within the Health Science major. At the time of Waseda’s reorganization in 2000, research in Sport Sciences in the graduate school was re-established, and by 2005, research fields in 19 areas had been introduced.
As athletics continued to flourish throughout the world and within Japan, society’s need for diversification, advancement, and specialization in sport was all the more evident. It became apparent that the study of Sport Sciences at Waseda needed to expand and carry on the university’s over 100-year-old tradition in the area of athletics. In an effort to respond to these needs, and in keeping with Waseda’s legacy, the Sport Sciences Department expanded and broke away from the School of Human Sciences in April 2003. In April 2006, the Graduate School of Sport Sciences was established to train scientists and specialized professionals, providing them with cutting-edge research on the science of sport and instilling in them a passion for athletics. Thus, Waseda assumed a new function as the source of research and specialized training in the area of Sport Sciences.

Mission
Sport has become an integral part of people’s daily activities and impacts people’s lives in numerous ways. The areas covered by sport sciences include the various issues of sport, health and science as they relate to daily life: medical evaluation and verification focused on human bodies as they engage in sports, reduction of medical fees, realization of a happy life through health enhancement and long-term care prevention, deep insight into sport as a “culture,” analyses and recommendations regarding the role of the sports business, and the explanation of management techniques that encompass the strengthening and diffusion of sport as well as the opening of markets.
This graduate school was established to comprehensively implement research on the various issues related to sport. Graduate students learn about the most advanced research results related to sport sciences, and not only devote themselves to the seminars of their research guidance programs but also attend the lectures and seminars of various related fields offered at the graduate school. The philosophy behind the establishment of this graduate school is the development of students who will contribute to the “creation of a rich sports culture” through activities in various fields related to sports.
