Founded in 1904, the Waseda University School of Commerce is the oldest faculty of business and economics in any Japanese private university.
In defining the needs of the time, the original objectives and purposes of the school pointed out that those with a strong academic foundation often lack business expertise, while those with business expertise often lack a strong academic background. Consequently, the supreme goal of the school was to educate young people so that they would be able to simultaneously equip themselves with a solid academic foundation and develop professional skills and expertise. This goal remains unchanged to this day.
In the more than ninety years since its establishment, the school has educated thousands of talented people who have become leaders in business, industry, politics and socio-cultural fields not only in Japan, but also in many other parts of the world.
The school shares with Waseda University itself the goals and values of academic independence, freedom of research, fostering of creativity and originality, and practical implementation of academic research and study. Since business and economic activities transcend national borders, the school promotes an international understanding through academic exchange programs and educates young people with a clear focus on international business. Many courses are taught by non-Japanese faculty members, and the school places strong emphasis on developing the foreign language abilities of students through stringent course requirements and training in modern language laboratories. The school also encourages its students to join the study abroad programs offered by the school and other sponsoring organizations, and recognizes academic credits earned at foreign institutions.
The school is proud to be a member of the first group of collegiate schools to offer courses in electronic computation, data processing and computer science, and provides several state-of-the-art computer terminal rooms for use by students and staff.
