The Graduate School of Japanese Applied Linguistics (GSJAL) was established in April 2001. it is the first independent graduate school in Japan, at which a teacher-training program has been systematically designed based on principles of teaching Japanese as a second language.
The major characteristic of GSJAL is that the content of its teaching attaches importance to practical study. This enables students to acquire a method of course management, material preparation and teaching methodology for the various Japanese language courses, in addition to the theoretical studies essential for Japanese language teachers. This is achieved through teacher training in Japanese language classes for international students in cooperation with the Center for Japanese Language, where comprehensive Japanese language curricula are set by types of skills and course levels.
This graduate school accepts people from all over the world, including international students, current Japanese language teachers, and other members of the public. It is our hope that people with different cultural backgrounds and broad experiences as adult members of society, will study hard and aim at a new kind of Japanese language education together. Our goal is to disseminate Japanese language education from Waseda throughout the world, through the GSJAL graduates' global network.
