Our school flag & Square academic Cap

Our school flag

“How we got our school flag”

Our school flag was first shown in public at the commemorative ceremony for our 30th anniversary in 1913, together with our academic cap and gown. Our academic principles were also enstated on the same occasion.
The flag was based on an idea from Seiji Tachibana, secretary to the then President, Sanae Takata, and was designed by Wajiro Kon. Tachibana described the crowd's reaction when staff entered the ceremonial grounds, dressed in gowns, and preceded by the new school flag, "The crowd was overwhelmed and gave a standing ovation". Since then, it has been our university's tradition to have our school flag precede a ceremonial procession.

Square academic cap

“The only square academic cap in the world”

Shigenobu Okuma had long desired to create an academic cap so distinctive that a student wearing it would immediately be identified as a Waseda student, wherever he went. Yahichiro, master of the Takashimaya tailors, was called upon to undertake this task, and he did not disappoint; he submitted the greatest work of his life after only three days.

Each square cap is stamped on the inside with the student's name, the course he is attending, the school seal and the legend "We confirm that this is a student of Waseda". Thus, the cap serves as a form of identification and, effectively, a status symbol. The cap, with its gold-braided badge, is registered as a trademark.
