■  Report on the official trip to survey and advise on e-Learning in Korea

Between November 27 and 29, 2005, a group visited the following four Korean universities in order to survey the current status of e-Learning in Korea and to offer proposals for the new projects and participation in the Forum for On-Demand Lecture Circulation.

Visiting group members:

Mr. Naoji Takagi (Executive Director, Waseda University);
Professor Michiko Nakano (Director, Distance Learning Center); and
Members from Waseda University International Co., Ltd., the FOLC office, and the DCC office.

1. Open Cyber University

During the visit to Open Cyber University, which was established as a 4-year university in 2001, an outline of the university and its undertakings so far, as well as an explanation of current activities were provided.

During the discussions, the activities of the Digital Campus Consortium, focusing mainly on an outline of Waseda University's distance education programs and support provided for the Forum for On-Demand Lecture Circulation, were also explained to Dr. Sung-Keun Chang, President, Mr. Byung-Jin Yim, Director of General Affairs, and 13 other attendees. There were also many questions fielded from Open Cyber University participants, and a very meaningful debate took place.

2. Kangwon National University

During this visit to Kangwon National University which is now into its fourth year of CCDL program, Professor Michiko Nakano provided the staff in charge of CCDL at Kangwon National University with proposals for a new style of CCDL program, and with proposals for participating in the Forum for On-Demand Lecture Circulation.

A lively debate regarding CCDL program took place during discussions, and this facilitated the exchange of opinions regarding future exchange.


3. Korea Digital University

During the meeting with Korea Digital University, Mr. Naoji Takagi, Executive Director gave an outline of the Digital Campus Consortium's activities, and provided proposals for participation in the Forum for On-Demand Lecture Circulation.

Following that, Prof. Chul-Hyun Yum, the Dean of External Relations, gave an overview of Korea Digital University and described the current status of distance learning in Korea.

4. Namseoul University

During the visit to Namseoul University, which from this year began participating in the "World Englishes and Miscommunications," international joint online course, Dr. Jung-Ja Kong, President and seven other attendees were provided with proposals for a new style of CCDL program, and for participation in the Forum for On-Demand Lecture Circulation.

After the discussions, delegates also engaged in other activities such as mixing with students that are participating in the above mentioned international joint online course, and taking a campus tour .
