Report on the "Coexistence in Asia" international symposium


The international symposium entitled, "Coexistence in Asia" was held at Fudan University on December 10, 2005 (Saturday). There were 17 participants from Waseda University, comprising staff and student representatives involved with the "Coexistence in Asia," as well as technical staff working on distance learning, DCC corporation members and DCC office members. More than 60 attendees interacted with each other on the day, including participating staff and students from five Asian countries as well as faculty and students of Fudan University, making it an extremely productive symposium.

[Main purpose]

This symposium is to reflect on the results produced by the "Coexistence in Asia" international joint online course, and to consider forms of cross-border cooperation between universities with regards to educational programs and the potential for human resources development through academic-industrial cooperation.  

At the symposium, Dr. Yoji Kato (Vice President, the R&D Group, Sony (China), Ltd.) from Sony Corporation, which provides support for DCC activities, gave a keynote presentation on the theme of "Human Resources Development from the Perspective of a Global Company". This was accompanied by activities such as short speeches by student representatives from each university, open floor discussions and a panel discussion between Dr. Kato and faculty involved with the "Coexistence in Asia". This facilitated the active exchange of ideas regarding "global citizens who understand the cultures and economies of the various Asian countries while flourishing on an international stage".

Title: Fostering a Global Citizen in Asia: 'New Trends of Interactive Cyber Seminars in Higher Education'

Prof. Michiko Nakano, Director of Distance Learning Center, Waseda University introduced the ideals and achievements of Waseda University's continuously successful International Distance Learning Program, expressed appreciation towards Fudan University and other universities cooperating in international joint online lectures, and stated anticipated results for the symposium.

Dr. Yoji Kato , Vice President, R&D Group, Sony (China) Ltd., introduced Sony (China) and Sony Corporation's human resources utilization and development program which is conducted in line with the basic policy of Sony's global operations, "Global Localization".

Title: How to foster 'global citizens' for Asia

During the panel discussion the five academics and Dr. Kato exchanged opinions regarding their visions of the types of human resources that would flourish internationally, and the form and structure of educational programs for developing such human resources.

There was an active exchange of opinions facilitated by questions from student representatives and the rest of the floor during the Q&A time at the end of the session.

Prof. Yan Hua (Director of Network Center; pictured on the right of the photograph), with Prof. Yong Qin Wang as a translator (pictured on the left), gave a report on the Technical Staff Meeting that was held on the morning of the 10th.




<<Symposium review by a sponsor, Fudan University>>

Dr. Chen Yin Zhang, Director of Foreign Affairs Office, Fudan University, provided a review of the symposium and praised its success, and also emphasized its major role in economic, political, cultural and educational fields in the Asian region and the importance of cooperation particularly between young human resources moving forward.

For reference

The "Special Lecture: World Englishes and Miscommunications " was conducted by Professor Michiko Nakano in the morning of the 11th to coincide with the "Coexistence with Asia" international symposium, and it served to further deepen exchange relationships with Fudan University students. The "Technical Staff Meeting" between technical specialists responsible for supporting distance lectures was also held, facilitating debate regarding potential technical improvements in distance learning.
