Since its founding, Waseda has made prodigious efforts to stay true to its founding principles of 'independence of learning', 'utilization of knowledge' and 'creation of good citizenship'. These three pillars are the founding precepts in which Waseda University strives to contribute to the progress of society, the development of talent, to deepen scientific principles, stay ahead of changes and be insightful of global trends.

Most recently, Waseda University has placed a tremendous amount of emphasis into nurturing intellectually independent people through its wide variety of academic programs. For instance, the "English Tutorial System" enables students to pick up basic English communication skills. Through the "Open Education Center," which offers various courses to all students regardless of their majors, and the "Theme College," Waseda is also committed to enriching students' learning experiences and pursuing a new style of education driven by voluntary participation. This new system provides opportunities for our faculty members and students to work together on real-world issues. Working adults also need to acquire advanced and current expertise to cope with the rapid changes in technologies and our social environment, as well as the increasing global exchange of human resources and materials. We believe it is our mission to respond to the growing demand for lifelong learning by offering extensive graduate programs.
