Q1. I would like to participate in a Waseda University exchange program. What are the first steps?
First, please confirm whether or not your home institution has an exchange agreement with Waseda by asking the study abroad coordinator at your home institution. Then, follow the instructions given by the coordinator. You must submit all application materials to the office of your home institution that handles study abroad programs. Waseda will not accept applications directly from students.

For fixed information about course guidelines, please refer to the syllabus distributed by your undergraduate or graduate school upon your arrival at Waseda University.
Q5. What level of Japanese is required to participate in Waseda University's exchange program?
Language ability requirements vary by program. Detailed information can be found on our website for exchange programs.
Q6. Are there exchange programs that use English as the medium of instruction?

Q7. What are the approximate costs for one year of academic study in Japan?
Costs vary by individual, but we recommend that exchange students prepare at least 1,000,000 JPY for one year of living expenses in Japan.
Q8. Are any scholarships available for exchange students?
Receiving a scholarship is a competitive process. At Waseda University, there are two kinds of scholarships open to graduate exchange students, the JASSO scholarship and the Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship. Please check the information and application requirements on our website for exchange programs.
Q9. Can I transfer the credits I earn at Waseda University back to my home institution?
Please consult with the study abroad coordinator or academic advisor at your home institution regarding this point.
Q10. What is the GPA requirement?
This requirement varies by program. For details, please refer to our website for exchange programs.
Q11. When is the deadline?
Students wishing to apply for this exchange program must submit the completed application form and all required documents to the representative international office of their home institution. This office will then send the documents to the Center for International Education (CIE) at Waseda University. Applications sent directly to the CIE from students will not be accepted.

Applications must be received by the CIE within the periods below:
April admission -------------- November 9 - December 1, 2009
September admission --------- February 1 - March 15, 2010
Q12. Can I live in a Waseda University dormitory?
Presently, Waseda University provides dormitory accommodation upon request by exchange students (as of October 2009). We will send detailed information on matters such as rent after your application is officially accepted.
Q13. My home institution does not have a student exchange agreement with Waseda. Am I still able to study at Waseda University? What are the necessary steps?
We suggest that you contact your home institution's international office for the most recent information on this matter. If you wish to apply to Waseda as a non-exchange (private) student, see Q14 below.
Q14. Can I apply to Waseda privately as a non-exchange student?
You may apply privately for the SILS one-year study abroad program and the Intensive Japanese Language Program. For detailed information, please visit the following websites: Please note that applying privately is entirely different from participating in the exchange program. Private applicants are responsible for all costs of studying in Japan including tuition.
Q15. I would like to study at Waseda for only one semester. Is this possible?
At this time, all Waseda exchange programs are one year. Exchange students are required to attend one full academic year.

In the case of special circumstances where a student can attend exchange program for only half a year (1 semester), upon consideration, admission may be permitted. For more information refer here.

Q16. I would like to study Japanese intensively? Are there any programs?
As an exchange student, you can choose the "Intensive Japanese Language Program" In addition, although it is separate from the exchange program, Waseda also offers a short-term summer Japanese language program. If you are interested in further details about the summer program, please click here.
Q17. What kind of extracurricular activities are available at Waseda University?
International Community Center (ICC) offers a variety of extracurricular activities such as short-term homestays, seminar tours, traditional Japanese entertainment, and much more. Information about these events, including how to sign up, will be posted on the bulletin board outside the CIE (Bldg. 22, 4th floor) and on the ICC website and CIE website under "Life at Waseda" .
Q18. I would like to join international clubs/groups during my stay in Japan. How can I do this?
At Waseda, there are two main international clubs, "Waseda International Club (WIC)" and the "Nijinokai". These clubs provide opportunities for international students and Japanese students at Waseda to interact through activities such as studying Japanese, hiking etc. If you find it difficult to adapt to life in Japan during your study abroad, you can find Japanese friends in these kinds of clubs. Q19. What kinds of facilities are available to exchange students?
You will have access to the librariesthe gym (fitness facility) (Japanese only), the swimming pool and other facilities. For more information, please refer to pages 8 to 39 ("About Waseda University & Guide to the Campus") in the International Students' Handbook.
