International students who are interested in internships with Japanese corporations must be able to communicate proficiently in Japanese business situations.
Proficiency in Japanese is not only a must in order to communicate with your coworkers and fellow interns, but depending on your position and type of duties, is also a matter of ensuring occupational safety.
International students who are seeking internships and are able to satisfy language requirements can refer to the following information to help in their search:
Tokyo Employment Service Center for Foreigners
http://tokyo-foreigner.jsite.mhlw.go.jp
This organization offers services to introduce internship opportunities for international students, mainly for those who can speak Japanese at a proficiency equivalent to Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Level 2 or higher.
Internships at Japanese Corporations in Japan
Internships in Japan are for the most part, aimed at third-year undergraduates and are offered during the summer months. Recently, however, internships which are offered in the spring for first- and second-year students are also on the increase. There are also instances of internships that are offered throughout the year.
The majority of summer internship programs have their application periods between April to June. Internship programs which take place in the spring start accepting applications in December. As the months approach, interested students should begin to regularly check the websites of organizations offering internships.
An Important Note from the Career Center:
Students who have found their internships on an individual basis should understand that the Career Center does not conclude Memoranda of Agreement with hiring organizations not affiliated with either WIN (Waseda Intern), an internship certification program, or any of the Collaborative Programs served by the Career Center. Furthermore, the Career Center strongly recommends that all students who participate in an internship program be enrolled in a liability insurance policy.
