The Institute of Asian Studies is the driving force of OAS, which supports Asian studies, and promotes research that is interdisciplinary and specializing in Asia. We believe that the year 2020 will become a turning point that will determine the future of Asia and the world, and therefore have determined our major theme to be "Envisaging the 'Versatile Community' of Asia and Japan in 2020". Based on this theme, OAS will develop multi-layered and three-dimensional research projects covering all fields of study from humanities and social science to natural science.
In order to promote such research projects, collaborated research and studies as well as academic exchange between Japanese and overseas researchers and research institutions will play an important role. IAS will implement the planning and management to build this 'network of knowledge', and by utilizing this network, will devise the Asia Salon, Asia Seminars and Asia Symposiums to be catalysts of Asian studies.
