Aizu Collection

 To aid his students in the study of Asian art, Dr. Yaichi Aizu collected approximately 3,000 works of Asian art, including grave goods, bronze mirrors, ancient roof-tiles, and rubbings of inscriptions. This database contains approximately 300 of these pieces.

@Dr. Yaichi Aizu was not only a researcher of Asian art, but also a talented and prolific calligrapher. He was fascinated with the natural beauty and art of Nara, and he wrote tanka poems about these. He was truly a Renaissance man. He wrote approximately 70 waka poems written according to the model of the Chinese classics.


The Katou Jun Collection of Japanese Epigraph Rubbings(Under Construction)

@Yaichi Aizufs student, Katou Jun, followed his teacherfs footsteps in studying Japanese inscriptions. Approximately 1500 pieces of his collection have been donated to the museum. The collection spans the time from the Asuka Period to modern times. The inscriptions are from bells, stone monuments, Buddhist images, and buildings. This database contains approximately 120 rubbings.

The Tosabayashi Collection of Ainu Cultural Artifacts

@Most of the objects in this collection were donated to the museum from the collection of the late Yoshio Tobayashi, a true friend of the university. The collection in this database includes articles of Ainu clothing, including examples of the Attus and Runpe styles, Ainu necklaces, called etamasaif, and earings, called eninkari.f


The World of Ancient Mirrors: Database of the Yaichi Aizu Collection of Bronze Mirrors

@The Yaichi Aizu Museum holds 208 ancient mirrors from the collection of Dr. Yaichi Aizu. These pieces come from many periods, from the 5th century BCE to the 17th century CE, and come from various regions in China, Korea and Japan. This diverse collection contains many unique and rare pieces.

Database of Asian art at the Yaichi Aizu Museum of Waseda University

  In 2004, the Tomioka Museum of Art in Ota ward, Tokyo, made a donation including precious Asian ceramics, Zen calligraphy, tea utensils, Buddhist engravings, paintings and archaeological artifacts. From the 903-item collection, 701 pieces are available for public viewing. The rest of the collection consists mainly of Buddhist bronze medallions and bronze mirrors. We intend to eventually make these objects available for public viewing.

  This database is under independent corporate administration by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science for the 2009 fiscal year. When funds can be gathered for the rapid publication of research, the Aizu Museum will build a comprehensive database. A committee for this undertaking has been formed, with Professor Katsuaki Ohashi as the representative from Waseda University.
