Yayoi Storage Jar
Found in an underground grave in Tokyo
Yayoi Period
Height: 21.5cm /
Interior Diameter:14.8cm
This piece was excavated from the ruins of a house in a village. It was probably
used for food, since serving vessels and shallow bowls were found with it. The
jar has serrated and straw-rope patterns. The red paint carefully applied to
much of the jar is made from red iron oxide. This jar is probably a simple
storage jar for rice. In agricultural rituals, more elaborate jars would have
been used.
