
The Tokyo Women’s Medical University / Waseda University Joint Institution for Advanced Biomedical Sciences opened in March of 2008. The institution is a new center for the advancement of biomedical science research based on a fusion of medicine, science, and engineering. The name “TWIns” is derived by combining the “T” from Tokyo Women's Medical University, the “W” from Waseda University, and the “Ins” from Institution. As implied by the name, this institution is the start of a revolutionary project in which two universities cooperate in the operation of a single research/educational facility and its activities.

For the past 40 years, Waseda University and Tokyo Women's Medical University have collaborated in artificial heart and biomedical measurement, fusing sciences, engineering and medicine. Today, the two universities endeavor to develop new academic fields in life science and medical technology, uniting Biomedical Sciences majors (Faculty of Science and Engineering) and a range of other disciplines. The Center for Advanced Biomedical Sciences, build in 2008 within the framework of "TWIns", provides a central facility for consolidating research in life science, medical technology and biology, so far conducted at multiple locations. It is sure to offer an ideal environment for top-quality research by international standards.
