Health and welfare are equally important for human beings, and there currently is a considerable demand for the development of new fields such as life science and medical bioengineering, along with the innovative integration of medical science and medical care with science and engineering.
In the past, research on the science and engineering side has been promoted to accommodate needs on the medical side. However, there are limits to pursuing interdisciplinary cutting-edge medical technology in this way. Moreover, there have been great expectations for developing state-of-the-art medical technology by introducing the advanced technologies of science and engineering (such as ultra micro systems, image information transfer systems, and bio-inspired novel materials) to the healthcare, diagnosis, and medical treatment fields. Given these expectations, it is imperative that we create new fields that result from the integration of medicine with science and engineering.
Tokyo Women's Medical University and Waseda University are now promoting a research partnership and have established a collaborative research center named “Center for Promotion of the Innovative Partnership of Medicine and Science & Engineering.” Both institutions will not only promote integrated research, but also will cultivate the human resources necessary for productive contributions to society in the fields of life science, biomedical engineering, and advanced medical care. We will also promote constructive collaborations with industrial partners to produce new and innovate concepts of therapy and diagnosis.
