The Fujiwara Iwaichi Memorial

藤原機関当時の藤原岩市(昭和17年2月シンガポールにて) Who's Lt.-Gen. Fujiwara Iwaichi?

Lt.-Gen. Fujiwara Iwaichi is an individual who played an extraordinary role as an intelligence officer in the early stages of the Pacific War. During the Pacific War, Japan's military had insisted on her "Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere" which aimed to decolonize the countries in East Asia. To achieve this, Fujiwara, a young major in intelligence within the Imperial Army, contacted Indian nationalists, overseas Chinese, Muslim sultans, and Atjehnese in North Sumatra. As a result, he achieved an astonishing degree of success. For example, the foundation of the INA (the Indian National Army), an army of Indian POWs, contributed to lead the independence of India. His success is owing to his own attempt to associate the military imperatives of the Imperial Army and the aspirations for independence from colonial rule of Indian and Southeast Asian nationalists.

'F. KIKAN' and 'Japanese Lawrence of Arabia'

He worked with his staffs, 'F. KIKAN'. According to his memoir "F. KIKAN", 'F' is stand for Fujiwara, freedom, and friendship. In the context of the Pacific War, 'KIKAN' means small intelligence service which mainly put stress upon HUMINT (Human Intelligence).

Fujiwara's dedication to the cooperation in Asia sometimes led him into confrontation with his Tokyo Superiors, Imperial General Headquarters, but he was not afraid to stand up to his master, when the occasion demanded. He had insisted that Tokyo should develop a consistent policy towards India. His sincerity made a deep impression on the Indian and Southeast Asian contacts and counterparts. He viewed himself as a kind of 'Japanese Lawrence of Arabia'.
